Fuji launches free digital magazine for the X-Series (Web, Android, iOS)

Fuji took another step into generating that Leica-Zeiss-RF-like magic feeling for their X-cameras by launching a brand new free digital magazine, the "Fujifilm X Magazine". It is free to read on the Web and as an Android app and iOS/iTunes app. There is one issue out now, November 2013.

When you look at the Web version, at first sight you may think it only has 9 pages, but that number is misleading. That's the number of features. The articles "grow" vertically, you have to keep pressing the small arrows or press-button-and-drag the mouse up and down to keep reading.

The first issue is around 45MB long and on Android the download takes longer than 45MB normally take. You can run the app on smartphones and tablets. You can only read this in landscape mode and because it has a fixed aspect ratio, it uses up less than the full screen. As a result of this, the text is really tiny on a smartphone and on smaller tablets, unless you are an eagle-eyed tween and how many of them are die-hard X photographers that would want to read this magazine?

We tested it on 8-inch, 9-inch and 10-inch Android tablets and unless you have eagle-eyed sight, you probably need at least a 9-inch tablet in order to read the article text without burying your face in the tablet. On a 10-inch tablet, the magazine "wastes" one inch of live screen space on the left side and one inch on the right side of the screen. It probably looks best on 12-inch tablets and larger.

The app is not greeted as a liberator among Android users. At Google Play, it scores a 1.8 out of 5 with 22 user reviews. But it's free and first generation. Plus there's always the F-word excuse for Android (fragmentation).

If you haven't used digital magazines in this app format, it takes a couple of minutes to get used to the format and navigation.
