Canon announces new 35mm Full Frame CMOS Sensor for low light Video capture

For about two years, we couldn't even get the camera manufacturers to even mention the phrase 35mm full frame. Now we can't stop them from releasing or announcing full frame products ;-) [exaggeration alert!]

With that as a semi-unnecessary preface, Canon has issued a new press release announcing a new 35mm full frame CMOS sensor for low light video capture. Press release parade at dpreview and Imaging Resource and Cinema 5D and Canon Global et al.

Discussion of the capabilities of the new sensor can be found at the very sensor-informative Image Sensors World.

Picture of the sensor and the prototype camera extracted from the Canon press release right below...

According to the Canon press release, a prototype camera using this sensor exists and was used in a couple of sample videos (incense-lit room and Geminid meteor shower). Short footage from videos are included in the Canon video below...

The revealed subject of the videos is revealing because the Geminid meteor shower peaked in mid-December 2012, so this prototype testing was probably done 2.5 months ago!

A two-minute video demo of the sensor prepared by Canon is available on YouTube from various sources, YouTube-embedded below...
