RED surprises-shocks with a new EPIC-M Monochrome $42K video camera
In a surprise announcement at the RED User Forums, RED reveals the new Epic-M Monochrome video camera using a new Mysterium-X Monochrome sensor, increased net resolution (because of de-debayering), a new low pass filter, and a starting price $42,000 for the "Brain" (with a Dragon update in the Spring of 2013). This will ship fairly quickly, October 1st 2012 is their estimate. (via DSLR News Shooter)
Leica M-Monochrome fans may find new friends in the world of RED users today. After all, they both share unconditional love for red dots :-)
Kidding aside, it is interesting that after so many years of photographer-fantasies of black and white sensors, we now get two high-profile Monochrome cameras within a few months of each other.
Also of note is the choice of a Friday night announcement. This is rare. In the world of politics, Friday night announcements are often used to announce unfavorable or inconvenient or embarrassing news.
