New Android digital camera from Samsung with 21x zoom, Jelly Bean, giant touch-screen, Wifi
Lots of new things to catch up to today! We start with the second Android digital camera from a major camera manufacturer! It is the new Samsung Galaxy EK-GC100 digital camera. The specs of this camera, compared to the Nikon Coolpix S800c show the difference between a company that is knee-deep in Android (Samsung) versus a company that is shyly splashing on the kiddie side of the pool (Nikon).
The new Samsung Galaxy camera comes with Jelly Bean - the latest version of Android, version 4.1, a giant 4.8-inch 720p touch-screen on the back, a 16mp 1/2.3" backlit CMOS sensor, a 21x telescopic optical zoom lens, built-in Wifi, Google Play (Android Market) access, and the possibility of 3G/4G data depending on carrier/etc/etc/etc. Also borrowing from the latest in the world of smartphones, the Android-camera has a 1.4GHz quad-core processor and a microSD instead of an SDHC memory card slot.
Samsung has been making superzooms around this zoom range, so it is not a surprise to see this type of a lens in their Android-camera.
From the retail perspective, this potentially creates an opening for smartphone/cellular/wireless retailers to start selling digital cameras, with this Samsung Galaxy camera serving as the Trojan Horse, given that just about every cellular retailer already carries Samsung phones.
While this is a big announcement in the world of cameras, in the world of tech and gadgets, Samsung also announced a giant Galaxy Note II "phone" with a 5.5-inch screen, which grabbed the lion's share of the spotlight among a wave of Samsung consumer electronics announcements.
