New compact-zoom announcement: Casio EX-ZR300 in Japan

In addition to the two previously mentioned Casio P&S cameras, Casio Japan has announced the brand new EX-ZR300. Details at Casio Japan (computer-translated). Not sure if it is a Japan-only model or the announcement hasn't rolled out elsewhere yet. It is not listed yet at the International and Europe websites that had the two previously mentioned models. (via DC Watch Impress {computer-translated})

This camera has a 12.5x optical zoom (24-300mm eq f3-5.9 stabilized), PASM, 3-inch (460Kilodot) display, 16mp 1/2.3" backlit CMOS sensor, dual core processor, and all the high-speed features that come with the "HS" line and the backlit CMOS sensors of our times.

I don't know if it is the computer-translation or the actual name, but this is probably one of the best euphemisms for the auto/dumb mode: "Premium Auto PRO". Yes, PRO is capitalized because it is more professional that way. Just like shouting makes your argument more valid :-)

This increases the number of new cameras in 2012 to 157, and I am assuming there's a few more entry-level and/or regional P&S models that haven't been bean-counted yet. The percentage of superzooms among all fixed lens digital cameras continues to be in the 40% territory, currently at 38.4%. Superzooms, for this exercise, are defined as cameras with an optical zoom ratio of 10X or more. Only the major manufacturers listed at the bottom of the aforelinked page are tracked. Tracking the rest is a one way ticket to madness :)
