Google launches Google Drive with 5GB free (more for $)
From the You-Can-Never-Have-Too-Many-Backups department,
The oft-rumored mythical Google Drive has finally become a reality! The tech-o-sphere is buzzing as you can see at Techmeme. Google Drive provides 5GB of free storage per Google account that you can use to store your files. It is available for Windows or Mac computers and Android devices, with iPhone and iPad coming soon (soon has not been defined).
Of photographer interest, if you want to entrust Google with another set of your backups, you can purchase additional storage for relatively reasonable amounts: $2.50 per month gets you 25GB which you can also use for your Picasa (shared pool). $5 per month gets you 100GB of storage. You can keep increasing storage up to 16TB (terabytes) for $800/month (see plans). The paid plans also increase your Gmail Inbox to 25GB (which does not count against your data plan).
36-megapixel RAW files can add up real fast :)
