Mirrorless Big In Japan: CIPA publishes DSLR vs Mirrorless shipment data by region
CIPA is also taking part in the festivities of the CP Plus Trade Show, and DC Watch Impress has published a report from the CIPA presentation (computer-translated). Of great interest is this pie chart that shows the DSLR vs Mirrorless shipments in the major geographical regions (Japan, Asia excluding Japan, Europe, The Americas, The Others, The Totals) for the second half of 2011 (H2:2011 = July 1st until December 31st). Mirrorless cameras are almost on par with DSLRs in Japan, but only 1/4th in Asia (excluding Japan), and under 20% in Europe and The Americas.
The aforelinked chart of pie-charts may be a bit crowded, so we have turned it into a basic bar-chart below that distills the findings:

If you superimpose the chart on an imaginary world map with the World (total) being the dividing line, we get an imaginary Yin and Yang form, with Europe and the Americas as the Yin, and Asia, Africa, and Australia as the Yang. Perhaps the popularity of mirrorless cameras in different regions is affected by magnetic storms or the gravitational pull from our galaxy's black hole.
