R&D: Canon patent on larger-size backlit CMOS sensors (computer-translated)
Patent-hunting blog Egami has spotted a newly published Canon patent (computer-translated) that based on the computer-translation, appears to be attempting to solve (some of?) the problems backlit CMOS sensors have at larger sizes (APS-C and beyond).
As you may recall, backlit CMOS sensors are popular (and significantly faster) with the compact fixed-lens digital cameras (eg 1/2.x" sensor sizes). Just look at the burst modes and video modes (1080 vs 720) of backlit CMOS cameras versus CCD-powered cameras at the 1/2.x" and 1/1.x" sensor sizes. However, multiple camera manufacturers noted in interviews that as the sensor size increases (eg APS-C), the benefits of backlit CMOS sensors (based on current technology) are diminished or even become a net negative.
