Kodak files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy (and sues Samsung)

After a series of financial troubles, Kodak has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. You can see the press release at All Things Digital and coverage of this at business and tech websites via Techmeme.

In addition to the Chapter 11 filing, Kodak is suing Samsung for violating an image preview patent according to The Wall Street Journal. Kodak has been suing companies left and right over digital imaging related patents.

While it's not really possible to accurately pinpoint specifics that lead to a company's downfall, there was a significant moment in the company's professional DSLR business at Photokina 2002, where Kodak rushed out their decidedly-not-ready-for-prime-time Pro DCS-14n 35mm-full-frame DSLR in order to beat Canon's announcement of the EOS 1Ds Mark I. Kodak "won" the press release battle by one day, but decidedly lost the war. Relive the history through dpreview.
