Canon G1x is officially announced with large sensor and 28-112mm lens
The rumor-leaked Canon G1X is now officially announced! It has a 4X optical zoom lens (28-112mm eq) starting at f2.8, 3-inch twist-and-shout LCD display, DIGIC 5 processing, 14-bit RAW, 1080p video, etc. Its opening price will be $800.
The camera is now available for pre-order for $800 at Adorama and B&H Photo. The starting price in the UK is 800 GBP and in 700 euro in continental Europe.
Now fans of big(ger)-sensor compacts have another choice, in addition to the Fuji X100 and the Sigma DP-series.
Canon G1x Sensor
The sensor is 18.7x14mm CMOS, around 43M43rds size, so it looks like the WF Advisors leak did not have a typo (1/1.5") [for a refresher on sensor sizes and the two sensor size notations check the dpreview 123di glossary]. To get a visual feel of how the Canon G1x sensor stacks up size-wise with other systems, check the bottom third of the page at Photo Review.
