Sigma goes completely insane, prices the SD1 at $9700 MSRP

Climb aboard the Sigma Crazy Train! As you may remember from last week's post the speculation was of a Sigma SD1 June release. And this has been confirmed by Sigma with an official press release. However, what is causing the Crazy Train to go crazier is the opening price of the camera, $9,700 MSRP. Yes, nine thousand, seven hundred. I repeat, $-9-7-0-0! The UK market price is 6200 GBP. The European price is 7000/7500 euro.

This could prompt a poll with the question "Has Sigma jumped the shark?" but I'll leave that to the forums! Speaking of which, for reactions to the madness, be sure to visit the dpreview Sigma forums early and often through the night and day! More discussion on the price at Rytterfalk's blog.

Press releases from various Sigma companies around the world are now out, and as you can see below, the price is consistent.

UPDATE (May-21-2011): The Sigma online store is offering SD1 kits with lenses included for actual pre-order starting at $7360. No body only option there. Also, see reactions to the announcement.
