New cameras in 2011 so far: Unleash the clones! [updated]
We have just updated the Cameras of 2011 page and the tally for the year so far (January 1st to 24th, 2011) is staggering! Eighty-four (84) new digital cameras have been announced by the major manufacturers! Eighty-four! This decidedly eclipses the 49 for the whole month for 2009 and under 70 for the whole month in 2010. One thing that may have been a factor is that this year's PMA has moved to September.
With CES being a consumer show, it is not a surprise that most of the cameras were at the consumer tier. Of the 84, only two were interchangeable lens cameras (Olympus E-PL2, Samsung NX11). Of the rest, only five support RAW natively (Fuji HS20, F550EXR, Kodak Z990, Olympus XZ1, Samsung WB700).
Of the 84, 22 of them (25+%) have a zoom ratio of 10X or more, and about half of those have a zoom ratio of 18x or more.
Fuji is responsible for a lot of them - they announced 21 new cameras in just one day, ten of which had a zoom ratio of 10x or more!
