New Canon DSLR, lenses and Powershots coming on August 17 or 19? (rumors)

When trying to read the camera tea leaves, one of the things one could look at (albeit speculatively and non-deterministically) is whether there are reviews published by websites that are always under NDA for new product announcements. We just completed an unusually quiet review round-up, and that may perhaps be something to add more fuel to a brand new rumor at Photography Bay that says that a new Canon DSLR, lenses and Powershots are coming on Tuesday August 17, 2010. The exact dates and times are typically nebulous because of the world time differences - Tokyo is 16 hours ahead of Los Angeles, with many other major population centers somewhere in between.

Think about it. If you are a review site and you know there is a big-bang announcement coming up, would you want your review to get "buried" by a wave of new product announcements?

+ Mon August 16 at 2:07pm NYC time: The anticipation and excitement over new gear can sometimes lead to reading into things that are simply not there. Laforet wrote on his blog last week that there's a "BIG announcement coming... something to do with Photography and iPads and iPhones…". It is fairly obvious (from the text) that this is not Canon-related, but enough Canon fans saw that as a Canon sign so Laforet had to clarify in a separate post that this is not Canon-related. But Laforet has been outed as a "Gear Fetishist" at Pro Lost, so, while what's coming may not be Canon-related, it may be gear-related :)
