Canon runs interference on Sony with 120-megapixel APS-H CMOS sensor
The stealth marketing wars continue with Canon running interference on the big Sony day by announcing a new 120-megapixel APS-H CMOS sensor (not a typo, one-hundred-and-twenty mega-pixels). The sensor has 13,280 x 9,184 pixels and 29.2 x 20.2 mm area.
As you may recall, they made some noise (no pun intended) three years ago with a 50-megapixel APS-H sensor, which did not find itself in any actual camera, so this may just be an exercise in R&D :)
Or perhaps is Canon so worried about the game-changing potential of the new pellicle-mirror Sony cameras that they felt compelled to pull the 120-megapixel trick out of the bag? :-) Then again, Canon itself may be planning pellicle-mirror DSLRs - they did mention in an interview about mirrorless cameras that they lean towards making smaller DSLRs...
