Pentax K-x price drops again: now $470 with one-lens, $574/$650 with two-lenses
The Pentax K-x price-wars have escalated! Now B&H Photo has jumped ahead with the current lowest prices among the major retailers and they include free shipping! Please note that they will not be accepting orders from 5:15pm EST today until 6:45pm EST on Saturday, so be sure to keep that in mind!
UPDATE: We have a new update of the K-x stock status page as of February 15, 2010.
Has Pentax gone mad or do they know what they are doing? It would certainly be crazy for Canon or Nikon to do something like this, however, this may actually be a very smart (or at least calculated-risk) move/gamble by Pentax.
Smaller players typically have a hard time getting people's attention, and they also have a hard time making products that (in the eyes of the average buyer) separate themselves from the market-leaders. With the K-x and the 100-colors viral campaign, combined with K-x's ISO-performance, Pentax has a camera that has indeed created some separation in the eyes of the average buyer. The average Engadget/Gimzodo reader is more likely to know of the K-x than the K200D or K-m.
But that alone may not be enough to get more people to "try" Pentax. Mix in competitive and tempting prices, and then you have a much better chance to get a stream of new buyers. Sure, it may not be as profitable as selling at higher profit margins, but the gamble here is, in our opinion, that they will have more long-term benefits with an increased base - more people "buying" into the Pentax system and LBAing over the next few years.
To summarize, this is a once-in-a-decade type of opportunity for Pentax, and they would be wise to try to make the most of it.
