Rumor of in-lens and in-sensor stabilization working together (Pop Photo magazine)
The February 2010 printed-issue of Popular Photography (newsstand, Zinio ($5 one digital issue, $10 annual digital subscription)) has a very interesting and promising tidbit on page #118 in the "Future Trends" segment. It writes that an unnamed "optical insider" hinted at the mating of sensor-shift and optical (in-lens) stabilization!!!
Obviously this is future-talk, so it's hard to tell if/when this may become available, or from which manufacturer(s), but if so, it would certainly be a welcome development! Photographers will be able to take advantage of both their stabilized-lenses and their stabilized-sensors. Right now, sadly, the two systems are completely orthogonal :(
As things stand right now, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic and Samsung-NX do not offer sensor-shift stabilization in their iLCs, while Sony, Pentax and Olympus do. The development and availability of such technology would give an advantage to the latter and perhaps nudge the former to also offer it.
