Leica X1 gets the dpreview review (now what?)
Fans of a particular brand or camera lobby for months for a dpreview-review of their favorite camera, but sometimes, they find themselves in the "be careful what you wish for" situation. With that as a completely unrelated (?) introduction, the Leica X1 has received a 28-page review at dpreview.com by Andy Westlake, who is also their resident lensaholic.
The camera is compared to the Panasonic GF1, Canon G11, but also the Nikon D300s for good measure, since they both have 12mp APS-C sensors. They also have a mini group comparison of the aforementioned. As usual, there's some juicy stuff in the JPEG/RAW comparisons between the four. Please keep in mind a lot of their samples are available as full-size JPEG downloads so you can analyze them at full-screen (all it takes is a wall of 10 monitors to do 1:1 pixel-peeping - you can get 1080p monitors for under $150 these days - ask for quantity discount).
As usual we won't spoil their findings here, but we will have a round-up of reactions later today or during the weekend as this review is likely to generate a lot of "excitement". One Dennis-Miller-doing-NFL teaser: pyrrhic victory?
Thanks to Stephen Gillette for the alert!
PS: If you hear "voices" while reading the review, it's not you - there's a Toshiba keyboard ad at dpreview that starts playing audio if your mouse cross into its "territory"
PS2: If your dentist calls out of the blue today and tells you need to come in today for two crowns - ignore it - they just want to get an X1 ;-)
PS3: The camera is available for pre-order at Amazon et al for $2000
