New Top Selling Digital Cameras update: prices drop, Nikon attacks
Once again all apologies for the month-long delay in-between updates, but right now we have a brand new Top 100 selling digital cameras at Amazon soap-opera update. This is a recurring feature but if it is your first visit, be sure to check the introduction first. Because of the month-long delay, this installment is a great way to check how the prices of many popular digital cameras have changed in the last 30 days.
All your market shares are belong to us
If you dig into your Sunday paper, you may notice a glossy six-page yellow promotional brochure from Nikon touting their latest discounts in Coolpixes and even some of their DSLRs.
This appears to be a market-share-grabbing initiative as they have slashed the prices of a number of Coolpix models. As you can see at the screenshot teaser above, the red and blue Coolpix L20 are at just under $100 (and with some extras), they are moving units off the e-shelves. Once upon a time Canon had locked up the AA-segment with their storied A-series, but since they began churning A-series PASM-eunuchs, they opened the door for other manufacturers.
Other Coolpixies entering the Top 25 on the strength of this new round of discounts are the black S570 (under $130) and the AA-based superzoom L100 (around $185).
SuperZoom Wars Heat Up
The superzoom wars continue to be very hot and one consumer-friendly side-effect is a continuous drop in prices. The Canon SX20 IS leads the way, followed by the black Panasonic TZ7. Meanwhile, the Sony H20 seems to have found its sweet-spot at $230 and remains in the top ten.
Other superzooms in the top 25 include the Canon SX120 IS, Panasonic FZ38 (FZ35), Fuji S1500, and the Nikon L100.
Price drops galore since mid-October
Our previous top sellers update was in mid-October, and as you can see in the "Price" box of the table, a number of cameras have dropped (some signficantly) in terms of price. This stems the earlier trend of 2009 where prices had been going up, even on cameras that were supposed to be getting discounted.
And one more thing - you can also use the Camera Charts Archives as a poor man's price-search reference. Look under the Archives on the right sidebar and check the updates at different times and dates. This goes back to February 2008 using the current format. For even older archives, you can navigate through the older posts at the Top Seller Charts at our old Blogspot blog that go back to June 2007.
