Hoya COO talks Pentax and "electronics guys"
We continue with the "trouble with tribbles" theme, as the Hoya COO CEO (we gave him a promotion!) continues to bring up "Pentax issues". Perhaps they have hidden all the Samurai swords and he has no way "out" of it ;-)
This time he gave an interview to Bloomberg, who could afford to buy Pentax and make it the official camera of New York City :) AP UK tried to get commentary from Pentax UK but there was no response.
Also, opinion on this interview at Rice High [New!]
Being the visionaries we are, we speculated earlier on that Pentax would need a company like Panasonic to save the day. Now the Hoya CEO COO says they need a "deeper relationship with some electronics guys".
But the Bloomberg story perhaps reveals the real reason why the Hoya executives have been so publicly and perhaps unusually "floating" Pentax the last few months - they are planning to make a $1 billion acquisition in the health-care field, where they are comfortably profitable...
It's like Mama-Cat pushing the kittens away...
More Crazy Speculation
Another thing to consider is that the Hoya guy used to run Dell Japan as mentioned in the Bloomberg article...
Not that the computer manufacturers are doing so well that they can go buying camera companies, but Pentax is not expensive all things considered. A parallel to this is a new/revitalized trend of "house brand" of consumer electronics, such as Best Buy's Insignia. Even Amazon has started doing it.
So how about Dell-Pentax? HP-Pentax? Toshiba-Pentax? Acer-Pentax? Fujitsu-Pentax? Actually, ASUS-Pentax could be a good marriage of underdogs ;-) But then there's also the issue of whether the Japanese can "let" one of their historic brands "fall" into the hands of non-Japanese companies.
Let's take Dell as an example, since the Hoya guy used to work there. How about Dell Optio P&S compacts bundled with laptops and desktops in Holiday and Back-to-school specials, and Pentax DSLRs?
Remember this segment is crazy speculation (in case it wasn't obvious!). Not regular speculation, but crazy speculation :)
And some more, reader speculation (see comment #1): How about Cosina-Epson-Pentax? And while we are at it, how about Casio-Pentax, free watch with DSLR purchase (Casio and Pentax used to co-operate on P&S cameras)?
