Samsung hibernates GX (K-mount DSLRs)
Amateur Photographer spoke with Samsung behind closed doors at IFA and they were told the GX-series is entering a hibernation stage while Samsung is busy working on the NX-series. This coming from the company who was banging the drums about becoming a top three DSLR manufacturer.
More from IFA, AP-UK also talks NX and has a short video of the camera prototype slow-roasting in Berlin. More NX prototype pictures from the trade-show at the flickr page of Reality Scans. Also, Reality Scans points out that the estimate Samsung is giving now is CES-2010, not PMA-2010. We rarely get interchangeable lens cameras announced at CES, so that should get Samsung some more publicity. More via Colorfoto.
Needless to say, this is also an interesting development for the K-mount, as Samsung has clearly not been the "electronics giant" that would come in and give the K-mount a boost. Other than a sensor, Samsung has just been cloning Pentax-branded gear and without any particular success outside Korea.
With the Hoya CEO making long-term viability statements, it is perhaps a sign that Pentax-Hoya may be looking for a not-Samsung partner-savior.
