Canon offers new practical EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS UD lens

While Nikon is discontinuing their 18-135mm DX lens, Canon does exactly the opposite, by launching a brand new EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS UD lens for $500. When mounted on the 1.6X APS-C EF-S DSLRs it is intended for, it will give photographers roughly the "equivalent" of 29-216mm. The lens comes with image stabilization, which is a plus since none of the Canon DSLR bodies offer sensor-based image stabilization.

It is compatible with 67mm filters, has 16 elements in 12 groups, and with UD glass as the name suggests. It focuses as close as 45cm (1.5 feet), and weighs one pound (455 grams).

This could be an alternative lens to purchase for first-time DSLR buyers, or an upgrade for those who want more zoom range flexibility, but don't want to jump to the 10X+ superzooms. This of course in theory, since the lens has not been released, analyzed, tested, or reviewed yet.

The lens is available for pre-order for $500 at:
