New Pentax Optio WS80 digital camera splashes onto the scene

Share/Save/Bookmark

Taking advantage of the popularity of their new Optio W80 and the current W60, Pentax has now revealed a new bee-colored camera (color choices semi-inspired by the W80 bee?)

The new camera is the Pentax Optio WS80, which offers underwater operation (up to 2 hours, up to five feet), with dustproof capabilities (JIS Class 6). However, unlike the TS1/FT1 and Oly-TOUGH, and their own W80, it does not offer drop-proofness or freeze-proofness.

On the camera side, it has a modest 10mp sensor with a 5X folded-optics (of course) lens that starts at 35mm wide. Other features include shake reduction, face detection (but can it detect fish species?), 2.7-inch LCD, and 30fps 720p HD video. The last part, combined with the underwater feature may make this a popular camera among the gadgetologists and techies.

Another plus (on paper) is that this camera doesn't look as "toy-ish" as the Canon D10 and the Fuji Z33wp.
