Nikon Coolpix S70 offers 3.5" OLED display with folded optics
Nikon took their Coolpix folded-optics "bijou" series to the next level today by offering a 3.5-inch OLED (organic LED) display to their brand new red Nikon Coolpix S70. The OLED is a new and luxury feature, which may explain the $400 starting price.
The camera will be available in multiple colors, and it comes out a year after the Nikon S60 was revealed. The S60 has a 3.5-inch display as well, which was a touch-screen but not an OLED. S70's screen is a touch-screen as well.
The sensor is (alas) the 12mp 1/2.3" overkill sensor-du-jour, and the camera has a 5X folded-optics lens that starts at 28mm wide with VR. Nikon marketing has gone over the top with "5-way VR", adding yet another meaningless yet ever-increasing statistic to confuse the average consumer.
The rest of the features are more or less part of the expected feature-set from a "bijou" P&S compact. The camera uses the existing EN-EL12 lithium-ion battery.
So, essentially, the trade-off and "existential raisin" (rough translation of "raison d^etre) of this camera is whether you fall in love with the 3.5-inch OLED display and want to get this camera instead of the dozens of standard-LCD competitors.
