New Canon SD940 IS (Ixus 120is) is a traditional Elph that starts at 28mm wide
The brand new Elph SD949 IS has a more compact, boxy body, unlike the wide-body SD980is. It is a more "traditional" Elph camera, and it does start at 28mm with a 4X optical zoom lens. This is something that will please fans of wide-angle, because before today, there was the solid but hard-to-find Canon SD880is, and the bijou SD960is starting at 28mm wide, and nothing else in this popular line of compacts.
Other features include a 12mp 1/2.3" sensor (it's everywhere!), 720p HD video, and the usual assortment of features you can expect to find from a $300 compact point and shoot digital camera. The display is a standard 2.7-inch (230K), not a touch-screen like the SD980is. Despite that, the price difference between the two is just $30.
It uses the NB-4L battery, which by the way is available on eBay for $15, with a CIPA estimate of 220.
The camera is expected to come out in August/September with an out-of-the-gate price of $300, and in your choice of fashionable colors. Amazon is already acccepting pre-orders.
