New Panasonic ZX1 (aka ZR1) squeezes between the TZ-series and LZ-series
One thing is for sure, Panasonic is not afraid to launch a new series of cameras. And they are usually successful doing it as we have seen the last 2-3 years. Their problems begin when the cameras are ...successful (LX3, GH1, TZ5K, etc). Yes, an odd thing to say the least.
So the new bilingual Panasonic ZX1/ZR1 squeezes in-between the AA-based LZ-series and the fun-zoom TZ-series. The camera lens is closer to the new TZ-series, as it is an 8X starting at 25mm (25-200mm eq, easy math). Infact, this raises questions of spatial overlap between it and the ZS1/TZ6, which currently goes for about the same price range.
Spec-wise, it reads a lot like the other two (FX60, FP8), with 12mp 1/2.3" sensor, 2.7" LCD, 30fps 720p video, PowerOIS, high-speed AF, etc, etc, etc. No need to repeat the litany :)
From a "stratigery" point of view, it gives Panasonic more flexibility in surrounding the new and old fun-zoom competition, with the TZ7, TZ6, old TZ5/TZ4 and now the ZX1/ZR1. Only thing missing is a more advanced flagship-fun-zoom above the TZ7 (hint-hint?).
The camera is available in four colors and should be released in September with a starting price of $280. You can already pre-order it at Amazon for that price.
