Sony Alpha A550 and A500 DSLR names leaked
One week after the official announcement of a trio of new Alpha DSLRs, there was a little bit of a leak at one of the SonyStyle websites, this time it was Canada's turn. This at Photo Club Alpha, which points to this dyxum.com thread, which includes screenshots of the leakage. As usual, we try to respect the original sources by not cutting/pasting everything here.
This leak only revealed the names, but based on the model names and the kit names, the Sonoltans are speculating in the forums. However, these are not the leaks that the mythical "Alpha A800" and A700-replacement fans have been waiting for.
Bonus Speculation
Since we have only two cameras, and the entry-level comes in a trio, Sony will likely have to vary the following parameters:
+ number of megapixels (10mp or 14mp)
+ LCD display (fixed like the A2xx or tilting like the A3xx)
+ introduction of HD-Video (?)
There are seem to be two branches to take here:
1) If the new A5xx-series is more advanced than the A2xx/A3xx series then all three variables above are up for grabs
2) If the new A5xx-series is at a similar level as the A2xx/A3xx-series, then both of them will likely have HD-Video (if HD-video is indeed added)
Furthermore, the 50-point difference may (or may not) indicate that the difference between them may be just like the A300/A350 and A330/A380, one with 10-megapixels and another with 14-megapixels.
So here are some likely configurations, assuming both of them will have HD-Video
+ 10mp and 14mp, both with tilting LCDs
+ both 14mp, with the A500 having a fixed LCD, and the A550 having a tilting LCD
+ 10mp with fixed LCD, 14mp with tilting LCD
However, the possibility of HD-Video raises another question. It is more cost-effective to develop one sensor with HD-Video than two, so perhaps both A500 and A550 will be using the same number of megapixels, and the variation will be the screen-type.
On the other hand, video with a tilting-LCD makes more sense than video without one.
Unless of course DSLR-Video is not the only major difference from the A2xx and A3xx-series.
Okay, we could go on for hours. EJECT! EJECT! EJECT!
