New Sony 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 SAM DT is the new kit lens (replaces 18-70 DT)

The new Sony kit lens has grown shorter, from 18-70 DT, to the new 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 SAM DT (pre-order, $200), but it "gains" a built-in autofocusing motor. That's the "SAM" in its name.

This is the lens that is included with the standard one-lens kits (L) for the three new Alpha DSLRs, and it is also bundled with the new 55-200 SAM DT in the two-lens kits (Y).

The lens is intended for "cropped-sensor" (APS-C) DSLRs, where you get the "equivalent" of 27-83mm focal range. Other featured include ED, aspherical elements and circular aperture.

Update: One of our readers (see comment #1) has pointed us to sample pictures with the lens taken with the new Alpha A380 and compared to the old 18-70 DT kit lens on the same DSLR. Some very interesting results!
