First impressions with the Sigma DP2

Share/Save/Bookmark

As we mentioned before, one of our goals (although not always succeeding) is to bring out diverse voices when it comes to gadgetologie. So we try to feature not just dpreview-type reviews, but also reviews and first impressions by real-world photographers.

With that as a preface, here is the first part of what promises to be an interesting look at the Sigma DP2, posted at the Lensist blog. Part #1 includes samples, first impressions, and points out a couple of issues.

Update One of our readers shared the first-day first-impressions with the DP2 in the comments below, see comment #1.

For more on the DP2, be sure to check the major DP2 updates at this blog, and at the RAWsumer blog. We still haven't decided if we are going to start a "DP2 Camera Diary".

DP2 in-stock status: Shipping for $650 at two places
The DP2 is in-stock and shipping at J&R World for $650 with free shipping. Their shipping estimate has increased from "1 to 2" to "3 to 4" business days. It looks like buyers are chipping away at their inventory :)

B&H Photo has the camera in-stock and shipping as well, for $650 plus shipping and handling which is based on your zipcode.

Meanwhile Amazon proper is taking pre-orders for $650, while 47th Street Photo is trying to capitalize on early-adopters by selling it for $50+$20 more. With two reputable retailers offering it for $650, 47th Street is now experiencing Greed-FAIL. And the goodwill lost to potential customers frustrated by this type of practice? PRICELESS. Having said that though, it is a free market driven by supply and demand. We are not saying people should not be allowed to do this, we are saying that in the long run, this is not a smart business practice.
