Photography Soup (was: 777 reasons to sing the blues)

Share/Save/Bookmark

Welcome to the first post-Photokina edition of the Photography Soup! We have a little bit of everything today as we try to catch up with all the non-Photokina-related action.

flickr member showcase: jjvornov
We continue the flickr member reader showcase with flickr member jjvornov who has submitted some great pictures to the pool, making the choice of our favorite very difficult, but difficult in a good way!

After careful deliberation, we decided on our favorite picture, a b+w conversion using Nik Color Efex. The favorite picture is *drum roll* Backs Turned Looking Down the Path, taken with the Sigma DP1. But since we tend to favor "atmospheric" pictures, we also picked a colorful picture as a runner-up, titled The Road at Night.

In this segment we feature members from our flickr pool, presented in pool picture submission order. This gives new and future readers plenty of time to submit their pictures and be featured in a future update.

Farewell Photokina
Dpreview finishes up their Photokina coverage with an excellent wrap-up post. There we also find their Top Ten products, and you will be surprised that the #1 spot is not taken by Canon or Nikon! Oh my!

And a few parting shots from Photokina, featuring Casio, Micro Four Thirds, Phase One, Mamiya, Alpha and a whole lot more at digitalcamera.jp who also covers the CEATEC Japan 2008 trade show.

Around the Net
Photocritic has picked their top 50 photography websites. A very nice collection of traditional, high-tech, and web 2.0 websites and blogs. Who was ranked #1? No spoilers here, you have to visit to find out.

JMG and other bloggers are chiming in and urging action in the Orphan Works legislation.

Reviews
Andy Westlake has posted his 50mm Digital Zuiko review. This is an f2.0 Four Thirds macro prime, which of course has an equivalency of 100mm in 35mm terms. Conclusions are on page #4, but as always, we won't reveal them here. Did they think it is ...Croatian?

A list of previews and reviews so far of the Nikon D90 has been assembled.

Future pictures
This is a nice triplet of pictures titled "Shots from the future".

Housekeeping
In addition to the recent changes, we also added more descriptive text to the dark green buttons at the top of the page, right under the page title. Now when you mouse-over (hover over) each button, it shows a one-sentence description. For example, if you mouse-over the dark-green "RSS" button, it will say "Subscribe to our full-text RSS/Atom feed".

We also added links to the "Daily Diaries" and started a new Canon G10 diary.
