In an ideal world, we could all have a studio in our pocket, with large format cameras with 100-megapixels and super-dooper lenses. But in the real-world, you can't do that. Sometimes using cameras like the G-series may get you the pictures you need says photographer Steven Alvarez.

Sat Jan 10: new missed review
Thanks to our reader in the Comments of the G10 review cluster for pointing out that we missed Steve's Digicams review of the G10. It starts with a press release (which is not exactly the best way to get people to continue reading), but you can jump to any page you want through the index on the left corner. Conclusions and Samples are the last two pages.

The same reader mentioned an individual and a group-test review by CDI, which is great for those who have access to the magazine. But the review is not available in a standard format online as far as we can tell. They do have the December 2008 edition of the magazine available online with the review starting on page #40, but the review is using an embedded flash format with unreadably small print, so essentially the only way to read it is to print it page by page. As far as we are concerned, this is too convoluted for 2009 - maybe this approach would be okay in 2001, not in 2009! :) Especially when there are already 30+ reviews. You can find the review by going through the December 2008 issue starting here. Alors!

If you missed the Mountain Trail Photo review (see January 3rd), you can enjoy it (or enjoy it again) as it is also featured by Nature Photographers.

dpreview has posted their group review of a collection of enthusiastic compacts and of course the G10 was one of them. But G10 fans, hold on to your seat. The enemy got the highly-recommended :( Hide away your tears G10 fans - perhaps dpreview was making a bold statement on increased megapixels by picking the LX3, just like they did by picking the SD880is in the previous group test, thus sending the manufacturers a strong message to focus on image quality instead of megapixel-wars.

For the text, you do need a translator :-)

Ken Rockwell does it again. This time he stirred up a hornets nest with his opinion that the SD880-IS is the only compact camera you'll ever need (we heard that DSLR-wise wrt the D40), how the SD880 is a much better option than G10. For all the juicy details, check the Ken Rockwell SD880-IS review, and search for "G10" if you want to find the parts where he talks G10.

Meanwhile a popular topic among G-fans is revisited, which would you get, G9 or G10? Assuming of course you can find the G9.

A very interesting post is featured at Serious Compacts, where Luminous Landscape juxtaposes prints from the G10 and a ...Hassy. Yes, a Hasselblad medium format camera. Oh my!

And a new but short review of the G10 has been posted by ephotozine. They have five pros and four cons. ISO is mentioned in two different places. Find out where!

Tue Oct 21: Catching up
Bill Lockhart summarizes his findings with the G10 so far.

What is the G10? An existential crisis of sorts? Life Tips tries to find an answer.

What's inside the G10 box? Postcard from Timperley unboxes it for us, while Ed Lee shares six pictures. These are JPEG, but not full-resolution.

The G10 is ranked a top 60 holiday gift of 2008 by i4u.com. The brief explanation is on the top left corner of the site. If you are allergic to ad-filled pages, you have been pre-warned :)

In case you missed them, there are two must-read reviews and comparisons:

  • The Online Photographer has a review by Ed Taylor, and it includes a side-by-side of the G9 and G10 camera bodies.
  • Meanwhile 60Hz Productions has posted a side-by-side, the battle everyone wants to see, G10 vs LX3! And since the two cameras have enough differences, one could even make the case of getting both, and using them in different situations. Having both would give one benefits such as shooting at 24mm wide, longer telephoto reach, a smaller camera when size matters, more megapixels for prints/crops, etc.

There's a review coming! Digital Camera Review has posted their first impressions on the G10. The camera is just out of the box, so please be patient for the full review. For now, they are teasing us with a video preview, sample pictures, first impressions, and more!

Wedn Oct 15
Tests from a reputable Japanese camera website have been posted. Check out Serious Compacts for the links and discussion.

Also, The Online Photographer has posted their hands-on review of the G10. Read all about it.

If you think this blog has too many ads, be sure to check out this one :) And "this one" is only mentioned because it is one of the most splogged articles of the day. Splogging has reached such a craziness level that splogging sites splog each other, and you end up having the same story appear half a dozen times on the same site. Oy vey!

A brand new G10 owner is blissful and promises more punk pictures coming up. Yes, this is a punk version of the G10!

Serious Compacts points us to a nice comparison between the G10 and the challenger, the Lumix LX3.

Neutral Day discusses Bill Lockhart's review (see Thur Oct 9).

Thur Oct 9
Photographer Bill Lockhart has received his G10 and is posting his first impressions on his blog. Find out what he found out!

Serious Compacts features a forum thread that compares the LX3 and G10 camera sizes. Check it out!

Mon Oct 6
CNet Asia and Leonard Goh take a first take at the G10. Please note that this is not a review, but a first take (opinion) on the camera.

A dpreview forum user has in his hands both the G9 and G10, and shares his first impressions with the forum and the world. Check it out and jump in the discussion if you have any questions. And in a different thread, the discussion is shot to shot times when using RAW.

In addition to B&H mentioned in yesterday's post, Ritz and Wolf Camera online also have the the G10 in-stock for half a grand with no sales tax and with free S&H.

The Pre-Wife blog has gotten their G10, and they have posted a slide-show of their first pictures.

Sun Oct 5
The G10 is now in-stock at B&H Photo. We don't know how long this will last, but the camera is in-stock as of the time of writing of this post (7pm eastern time).

Sat Oct 4
A photographer posts G10 samples, and a big debate ensues in the Canon dpreview forum.

Another discussion compares and contrasts the G9 vs G10, and another forum user is taking requests for LX3 vs G10 comparison test shots.

A photographer has just received the g10 and posts body pictures, and promises more in the next few days.

An on-going G10 discussion is buzzing in the Serious Compacts flickr forum.

Thur Oct 2
The G10 is now shipping! A round-up of the places offering it for shipping right now are listed in the G10 shipping alert!

Wedn Oct 1
Roberts has received some G10 units, and a Roberts blogger has posted a sample picture.

Tue Sept 30 new updates
Circuit City has the G10 listed for an October 2nd release date, and it is currently receiving a $25 discount. The pre-order price is $475.

High ISO snapshots from Photokina, taken by a show attendee, are discussed in the Canon dpreview forum.

Tue Sept 30 catch-up
Let's start with something competitive. Some flickr users are discussing G10 competitors. And an RF forum user is trying to decide between the G10 and the competition as well.

Continuing with the G-series tradition, the G10 had a strong showing in the Top Sellers Charts, remaining in the top ten, on the strength of pre-orders alone.

Microsoft blogger David Sayed blogs G10 from Photokina, while Mike Fox recaps the G10 specs.

"Real" camera body pictures from the Photokina trade show floor at DigiCamReview and Trusted Reviews. And DCI has a longer write-up with text and pictures.

The G10 is available for pre-order at Amazon at the list price of $500, while the two other competitors have taken a pre-order discount to around $450.
